Freestanding Polycarbonate Pergola with Side Wall in Roscommon

Freestanding Patio Shelter with Additional Side Protection

The main requirement for this Roscommon project was to create a permanent sheltered outdoor area without relying on the house wall as a structural support. A freestanding aluminium pergola allowed the structure to be positioned independently within the available space.

An opal, or milk, polycarbonate roof was selected for the fixed overhead cover. It provides protection from rainfall while allowing diffused daylight through the roof rather than creating a completely dark covered area.

One side of the pergola was fitted with a polycarbonate wall to provide additional protection from exposed weather. This was particularly useful for reducing the effect of wind and wind-driven rain from that side while keeping the other sides open.

The freestanding structure required a secure fixing arrangement at the base. A U-shaped profile was fixed to the client-prepared base before the aluminium pergola was attached, providing a defined connection between the finished base and the structure.

Rainwater is managed through the drainage system integrated into the pergola. No additional lighting, glazing systems or other equipment were installed as part of this project.
