Freestanding Double Carport in Newport, Co. Mayo

Freestanding Installation Beside an Existing Stone Wall

The homeowner required one covered parking area large enough to accommodate two cars while keeping the existing stone boundary wall intact. A freestanding configuration allowed the carport to be positioned closely beside the wall without attaching structural components to the masonry.

Careful setting-out was essential because the carport had to follow the available driveway space while maintaining suitable clearance from the irregular stone surface. The independent aluminium frame avoids transferring structural loads to the old wall and preserves its appearance.

The driveway was already finished with paving blocks. Selected sections of the paving therefore had to be removed at the post positions so that dedicated concrete foundations could be formed underneath. The posts were then securely fixed to these structural bases rather than relying on the paving surface itself.

The finished black frame creates a clean contrast with the stonework and the light-coloured house. Its opaque trapezoidal sheet roof with fleece provides permanent overhead protection across the two-car parking area, while the open-sided layout keeps vehicle access straightforward from the driveway.

AVC Build completed the design, made-to-measure supply, delivery and professional installation. The completed structure is supported by a 10-year structural warranty.
